How early is too early?

I know there are some of us that who would love to have Christmas all year round, and keeping the values of God, family and giving with you throughout the year is a good thing. But how early is too early for retailers to start their Christmas promotions? This year Sears started the earliest I have ever seen with their Christmas shopping in July promo. I realize that some people Christmas shop in July, but I would bet that the vast majority of people do not, which in my mind just makes it nothing more than your average sale using a Christmas gimmick to promote it. I know with the current state of the economy that retailers are desperate for sales, but I think trying to pull off Christmas in July is a bit much.
